Zoom H4 Windjammer
The Zoom H4 windshield that comes with the handy little recorder is ok, but if you are looking to do anything at all outdoors you really need to upgrade. The little ball of foam shown to the left doesn't do a whole lot when it come's to negating even the slightest of breeze.
Rycote, one of the top players in the windshield market, makes a great little sock, deadcat, or windgag (whatever you call it) for the Zoom H4. The device fits loosely over the recorder and is tightened in place by a nice little velcro strip on the bottom.
We ran a few test; one with no shield, one with the default foam ball, and one with the cool little Rycote windshield. We had the a small fan blowing and recorded a few things. The Rycote windshield was a sure winner. The only downside is that i cost around $50 US, while this is not that much for a full time sound guru, it is for the hobbiest.
We are headed to the Beach in a few days and will do some more test and post the results here, so check back so you can hear the difference yourself. :)
Here are a list of a few of the mini windjammers that Rycote makes.
